Sysipha

Sysipha is a city of maintenance. It was built to fall apart, so that it might be put back together again. The bridges crumble every morning at dawn, and by noon, the citizens have rebuilt them stronger than before. The water mains burst on a schedule known only to the High Engineers, who treat every disaster as a drill.

The inhabitants are tired but proud. They do not build new monuments; they keep the old ones standing. They believe that "uptime" is the highest virtue, and that a city that never sleeps must never blink. They carry pagers that sing the song of emergency, summoning them to fix a crack in the sky or a leak in the fabric of reality.

To the traveler, Sysipha seems like a hell of endless labor. "Why not build it right the first time?" they ask. But the citizens shake their heads. They know that entropy is the only constant, and that the only way to defeat it is to make the act of repair a religion. In Sysipha, nothing is ever finished, but everything works.
