Hidden Cities

Glitch

Glitch is a city that was built wrong on purpose. The streets loop back on themselves, the doors open into walls, and the clocks run backwards on Tuesdays. The citizens are saboteurs of their own reality. They delight in finding the cracks in the pavement and prying them open to see the code beneath. They do not fix broken things; they celebrate them. A flickering streetlamp is not repaired but worshipped as a shrine to Entropy.

The ruler of Glitch is the "Jergling," a mythical figure said to live in the crawlspaces between the buildings. The inhabitants leave offerings of burnt capacitors and syntax errors at his altar. They tell stories of the "Yuppies" who tried to pave over the city with smooth, functional concrete, and how the city swallowed them whole.

To live in Glitch is to accept that nothing works as it should, and that this is the only way to be free. The citizens wear their bugs like badges of honor. "Functionality is a prison," they say, as they walk through a wall that shouldn't be there, laughing at the travelers who are still trying to use the door.
