Modular Cities

Configura

One arrives in Configura not by road, but by the impulse to weigh a thought in the hand as if it were a stone. The city is not built upon foundations but assembled piece by piece from obsidian blocks, each delivered on silent barges and etched with a single, unadorned principle. A fine, dark dust, the residue of axioms that have been ground down and remade, coats every surface.

The inhabitants are not masons but Adjusters. Their sole task is to test the integrity of the blocks, weighing them on seven immense bronze scales before linking them with heavy copper hasps. They do not speak, but listen to the low hum that passes through the connections; a dissonant frequency means an arrangement is unsound and must be dismantled.

You might mistake Configura for a library of static, heavy truths, a permanent archive of what is already known. But its purpose is not storage. The city is a machine for discovering leverage, a place where the correct arrangement of three old ideas can cantilever out to support a new one that has not yet arrived.
