Compatibilia

Compatibilia is a city built across a great chasm. On the west bank lies the land of Unix, a place of strict permissions and case-sensitive laws. On the east bank lies the land of Windows, a chaotic realm of carriage returns and drive letters. The city itself is the bridge that connects them. The inhabitants are the bridge-keepers and the translators, men and women who spend their lives smoothing out the jagged edges of difference.

They run the "Git Scrubbers," great machines that catch travelers from the east and strip them of their extra carriage returns before allowing them to cross to the west. They maintain the "Reverse Tunnels," secret passages that allow sound to travel backwards through solid walls of firewall-stone. They are tinkerers who build joysticks out of spare parts to control the shifting virtual landscapes of the horizon.

In Compatibilia, nothing is ever pure. Everything is a hybrid, a hack, a workaround. The city is ugly to the purist, covered in the duct tape of scripts and the scaffolding of containers. But it works. It is the only place where the two halves of the world can touch without destroying each other. The citizens take pride in their gray existence, knowing that without their constant, invisible labor, the chasm would be impassable.
