Alchemia

Alchemia is a city of perpetual twilight, lit only by the amber glow of spirits trapped in crystal bottles. The streets are paved with crushed ice that never melts, and the air smells of citrus peel and crushed juniper berries. The inhabitants are alchemists of the social soul; they stand behind long counters of polished mahogany, mixing colored liquids in silver shakers to cure the ailments of the heart. In Alchemia, there is a potion for every form of loneliness, and a tincture for every shade of regret.

The architecture of the city mirrors the tools of the trade: towers shaped like measuring jiggers, bridges that spiral like lemon twists. Visitors come to Alchemia not to see the sights, but to be heard. The currency here is the confession; one pays for a drink by telling a secret that has never been spoken aloud. The bartenders listen with the stoicism of priests, nodding as they pour, transmuting the lead of daily troubles into the gold of a fleeting intoxication. Alchemia exists because the night is long, and everyone needs a witness.
